One Out of Two

Services: Book Design & Illustrations
Timeline: 8 weeks

This is the story of how I ended up with one kidney instead of two. When I was seven months old, a very careful doctor noticed that something wasn’t adding up in my body. What came next was scary: surgery, two long years of treatment, and a hospital that became my second home. But I also had a big, loud, loving familia who spoiled me, played with me, and refused to give up.

Told with real family photos, illustrations, and a little kidney with a very big job, One Out of Two is a true story about childhood cancer, familia, and resilience. It’s the story of how my kidney and I grew side by side.

Combining a playful illustration style with real-life photography, the book creates a visual timeline from my early childhood to young adulthood. Designed to be an easy-read for kids while offering a meaningful story for families and readers of all ages. A kid-friendly glossary helps explain medical terms in simple, approachable language, making complex topics easier for young readers to understand.

Typography plays a central role in the storytelling, with oversized, bold type spanning across spreads to emphasize key messages, create pauses, and give important moments the space they deserve.
